3/8: Mark Maestrey Places 3rd In Atlantic City
Senior Mark Maestrey (119) made it back to back State medal performances with his 3rd place performance at the 2009 NJSIAA Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City over the weekend.
Maestrey (39-4), who placed 6th at 112 in 2008, went 5-1 in the tournament with his lone loss coming to runner-up Joe Duca of Paulsboro. On his way to the 3rd place finish, Maestrey defeated a pair of Region champions along the way. Maestrey defeated Region 5 champion Mike FrancoBandiero of Edison by scores of 7-5 in the championship quarters and 7-2 in the wrestleback finals, and he defeated Region 7 champion Hugh Nawn of Lenape by fall in the championship bracket and 11-5 in the wrestleback semifinal. Both wrestlers had entered the weekend undefeated. Maestrey also recorded the fastest fall of the tournament in his other win, a 31 second pin of Delbarton's Jeff Canfora in the opening round.
The 3rd place finish is the highest for a South wrestler since 1984 when Darnell Myers won the title at heavyweight.
Maestrey's medal performance caps a terrific high school career that saw him collect 119 career victories, 2 State medals, 2 Region medals, and 4 District medals, including a championship in 2008. He will continue his wrestling career next season at St. Cloud State University.

2/21: Indians Get 3 Champs, Finish 3rd as a Team at Districts
5th-seeded Allan Manzano and 4th-seeded Kyle Kenny, along with top-seeded Mike Maestrey, won individual titles and four other South wrestlers earned medals as the Indians finished in 3rd place as a team at the District 24 Tournament.
Manzano, a sophomore, knocked off 4th-seeded Steve VanErde of Lacey in the quarterfinals before upsetting top-seeded Taylor Kau of TR North in the semis to advance to the finals. In that final, Manzano knocked off 2nd-seeded Rich Tieto of Southern, 3-2, to claim the 112 pound title.
Sophomore Kyle Kenny also came from a low seed to win his title. Kenny upset the #1 seed, Brandon Lintner of Pinelands in the semifinals and then outpointed 2nd-seed Vince Prozzo of TR East, 9-8, in the finals to win his first District title and also grab District 24 Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.
Mike Maestrey was dominant in his run to the 125-pound championship recording a pin, a tech fall, and a major on his way to his first title.
South's three champions receive byes into Friday night's Region 6 quarterfinals, while their 2nd and 3rd place finishers will compete in Tuesday night's opening roung.
